Animals, Art and Chocolate

August 15, 2010 by Shawn G

Calling all artists!!  Art for Animals – A Chocolate Affair is around the corner, and the animal shelter is again seeking donations of art.
Art for Animals is a fundraising event featuring silent and live auctions of art and other treasures, along with a wide offering of chocolate desserts.
Last year’s event was a huge success for Georgetown Animal Shelter, raising almost $12,000. Community members and local artists donated dozens of pieces, and shelter cats and dogs also created some eye-catching art.
The shelter is now accepting donations of art for this year’s event, as well as volunteers to help plan the event. Donations should be delivered to the Georgetown Animal Shelter at 110 WL Walden by September 19th. If you would like to join the planning committee, please contact Jackie Carey at 512-930-3527.
Art for Animals 2010 will be Sunday, October 24th at the Community Center in San Gabriel Park. Tickets will go on sale in August. Everyone that attends Art for Animals will be eligible to win a $250 gasoline/food gift card (must be present to win).  Tickets are $5.00 in advance or $7.50 at the door.

Tickets will be available soon at the Visitor Information Center, 101 W. Seventh Street; Georgetown Animal Shelter, 110 W.L. Walden Drive; Wonderful Things, 1003 S. Austin Avenue; or Framers Gallery, 610 S. Main Street.

Everyone needs to be pampered...even ones with four legs :)

I spoil my animals, I do.  My dog has a collar for every month and holiday.  I have a cat that is diabetic and gets insulin shots twice a day.  I don't have children so I treat them as if they were.  I don't see a problem with it - I love them, so why not?  Spoiled pups in New York City

Why do dogs pace?

This morning I wake up, and like every morning, my dog comes to the side of the bed and stares at me.  She walks to the door, comes back to the bed, goes back to the door and then finally sits next to the bed.  Two seconds later, she repeats the same process.  I always wondered why dogs pace back and forth so I did what I always do when I want to look something up – I "Googled" it.  Dogs pace because they have a ton of energy and don’t know what to do with it.  That energy can be reduced by giving your dog plenty of exercise.  The only thing my dog wants to do in the morning is go outside, do the deed and  then come back in to eat.  She usually doesn’t get her exercise until the evening, when it’s somewhat cooler outside.

Smoking is bad for your pet too!

An estimated 50,000 Americans die from secondhand smoke annually and 4 million youths (16 percent) are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes.  Studies have shown that animals face this risk as well.
